Guide to Making your Federal Payment online with the IRS

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to set up an IRS account to make your estimated quarterly payments and/ or balance due with your tax return.

Set up your individual IRS account:

  1. https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
  2. Choose “Sign Into your online account”
  3. Choose “Create an account”
  4. Set up a username and password

You can pay full or partial payments of your tax balance due, pay quarterly estimated payments for personal or business, or set up payment plans for back taxes owed.  

Pay your Individual Federal Tax balance online:

  1. https://www.irs.gov/payments
  2. Click “Pay in Online Account”
  3. Click “Sign into your Online Account.” -   If you do not have an account set up, choose to Create a new account and set up a username and password
  4. Sign in with ID.me
  5. Account Home page – Choose “Make a payment”
  6. Choose how you would like to pay – Bank account or Credit card
  7. Choose the type of payment you are making.  (Pay balance in Full)
  8. Click Next
  9. Make sure to select the correct tax year for your payment
  10. Enter your payment amount
  11. Enter your payment date
  12. Enter an email address to receive confirmation.

Pay your Individual Federal Estimated Taxes online:

  1. https://www.irs.gov/payments
  2. Click “Go to your account”
  3. Click “Sign into your Online Account.” -   If you do not have an account set up, choose to Create a new account and set up a username and password.  
  4. Account Home page – Choose “Make a payment”
  5. Choose how you would like to pay – Bank account or Credit card.  
  6. Choose “Estimated Tax”
  7. Select the Tax year for this Estimated payment
  8. Enter your Estimated Payment amount
  9. Enter an email address to receive a confirmation
  10. Click Submit
