2026 Guide to Making Your Maryland Individual Tax Payment Online

In 2026, Maryland moved individual taxpayers from iFile to Maryland Tax Connect (MTC). Individuals moved over on September 1, 2026, joining businesses that moved over in the first phase of the rollout. iFile is now view-only, and the old online bill payment system is gone.

Your old iFile login does not carry over. Below is how to set up an account, how to pay with or without one, one trap from the switch that can cost you a duplicate payment, and how to give KMAF access so we can help when a Maryland notice arrives.

Set Up Your Maryland Tax Connect Account (Existing Maryland Filers)

  1. Go to the Maryland Tax Connect Individual Taxpayer Portal: https://mdtaxconnect.gov
  2. Select “Sign Up”.
  3. Choose “Create a Maryland Tax Connect Profile” under Quick Links. (Review and, if you agree, accept the portal terms of use.)
  4. Set up your initial profile to include:
  • Name
  • Proposed User ID (you choose)
  • Daytime phone number
  • Email
  1. Submit your registration. You should receive a confirmation number.
  2. You will receive a temporary password via email. Log in using the temporary password, set up security questions, and change your password. The temporary password expires after three days, and the new password must be at least 14 characters.
  3. Multi-factor verification via email will be automatically set up for future logins. Each login sends a one-time code to your email. You can have the portal remember your browser for 90 days.
  4. On the User Roles page, link your account as an “Administrator,” the role for an individual taxpayer.
  5. For existing Maryland tax filers, select “Link your Tax Account.” No registration code is needed; the portal checks what you enter against your most recently filed Maryland return.
  6. You’ll need to provide the following to link your account:
  • Social Security Number
  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of Birth
  • Filing information from your most recent Maryland tax return

First-Time Maryland Filers

For first-time filers, the process is a bit more involved because there is no prior Maryland return to verify you against:

  • File your first Maryland return online at Maryland Tax Connect using “File a Resident Income Tax Return as a Guest.” No account is needed to file.
  • After that return is processed, register using the steps above and validate details from the return you filed, or use the registration code the Comptroller mails to first-time filers.

Pay Your Maryland Individual Income Tax Balance Online

With an MTC Account

  1. Go to: https://mdtaxconnect.gov
  2. Log in to your Maryland Tax Connect account.
  3. From the “File and Pay” menu, select “Make a Payment.”
  4. Enter the taxpayer’s and spouse’s (if required) Social Security number.
  5. Choose the tax year and enter the payment amount. Click Continue. For an estimated payment, the portal shows the full tax year, not a quarter. That is expected. Enter the quarter’s amount, and the payment is applied by its date.
  6. A “Form Payment” tab will appear. Verify the payment amount, check the box if you are paying the entire balance, and select a payment method. You will need your banking information (account number and bank routing number).
  7. Confirm billing address and authorize the withdrawal.
  8. The final screen is your payment confirmation details. You may want to print or save this screen for your records, including the confirmation number.

Pay Without an Account

As a Guest

  1. Go to: https://mdtaxconnect.gov
  2. Select “Make a Payment as a Guest” from the Quick Links box.
  3. Review and accept the terms and conditions if you agree.
  4. Enter the taxpayer contact information requested:
  • Name
  • Daytime phone number
  • Email
  1. Select payment type:
  • Bill payment (You must have an invoice number from the Comptroller of Maryland. Use the invoice number on your Billing Notice, not the Notice ID.)
  • Estimated Payment
  • Multiple Account Payment
  1. Enter your Social Security number, then click Next.
  2. Enter payment amount and select method. The Comptroller’s guest payment guide lists bank debit (ACH) as the only payment type here.
  3. To schedule an electronic payment, you will need:
  • Account number
  • Routing number
  • Type of account
  • Name associated with the account
  • A phone number
  • A withdrawal date
  1. Check the box to authorize the withdrawal and click “Submit”.
  2. The final screen is your payment confirmation details. You may want to print or save this screen for your records, including the confirmation number.

Already Scheduled an Estimate in iFile? Do Not Pay It Again

If you scheduled a Maryland estimated payment in iFile before it went view-only, that payment is still on file and will post as originally scheduled. You cannot edit or cancel it in iFile. Do not make another payment for the same period in Maryland Tax Connect; the Comptroller warns that it can create a duplicate. If you need to change a scheduled iFile payment, call 1-800-MD-TAXES and select Option 1.

Give KMAF Access to Your Account

Maryland Tax Connect has no separate CPA view of your account. You are the Administrator. We register as an authorized user, and you grant us access from your profile. A power of attorney on file with the Comptroller does not automatically grant us access to the portal; you still have to grant it.

That step matters most when something goes wrong. A Maryland notice, an unfamiliar balance, or an estimate that didn't post is much faster to resolve when we can see the account instead of working from a forwarded letter. If you also own a business, both accounts can sit under one profile.

What to do now: set up your account before your next Maryland estimated payment is due, check whether any iFile payments are still scheduled, and if you would like KMAF added as an authorized user, contact us at https://kmaf.cpa/contact.
